If your RAID system failed
A RAID system in inexperienced hands can have disastrous results. If you want to have more possibility to recover your information, follow these tips.
Never manipulate a broken Raid system if you are not an expert. This means, never do it unless you are very familiar with HDDs, RAID controller and system configuration.
If a broken hard disk is replaced by a new one, the RAID system automatically starts a data reconfiguration process. During this period, there is no data redundancy.
Never replace a hard disk drive unless you are absolutely sure which one has failed and when. If you do so without knowing the latter, the data reconfiguration system will fail.
If your RAID system fail, do not start the RAID rebuild process. You will have an operational RAID, but all existing data will be lost.
If your RAID system did not fail
Prevention is the key. This can save you a lot of headaches.
Keep your Raid system in a safe place, humidity and temperature changes free.
Backup your RAID system and check it before making any hardware or software change.
Label all HDDs by indicating their system position and by taking note of the following:
- Raid type: si es Raid 0, Raid 1, Raid5, etc.
- Disk order.
- Block size.
- Parity rotation.
- Beginning of the first RAID area.
